State of iOS4

All Nokia and Android owners who were sneering at us Apple fanboys were right. Multitasking really is great feature and it adds to iPhone user experience a lot. Unfortunately, just having multitasking in iOS4 is not quite enough - new versions of applications are also needed. Old applications behave just like before: when you click away from the app, it quits and restarts next time you go back to it.

Currently many of my favourite apps already support iOS4: I can chat with Colloquy and Beejive, listen to music with Spotify and track my dog walks with Runkeeper. However, there are still a couple of apps which I am really looking forward being updated.

Navigon is the excellent navigator I'm using almost always while driving. After iOS4 update, it will survive phone calls, checking email and other brief visits outside the app. Already now it is able to resume interrupted navigation, but there is an irritating loading screen every time when coming back. New version is expected to arrive in July.

HS.fi is the web version of Finland's biggest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat. HS developer team has already posted teasers about the upcoming app in Facebook, promising many new features including more content, the digital version of whole newspaper for subscribers and new user interface. New version is already being reviewed by Apple and is expected to be available for download any day now.

Words for Friends is the online multiplayer version of Scrabble that I'm playing when there are brief dull moments. The game is slow by nature, so it would be natural to go in and out of the game while thinking of the next move. iOS4 fast app switching would suit this game perfectly. There are no news up updates yet.

I'm checking out App Store's updates several times a day, and it's always a pleasant surprise to see new items available for download.

Just as sad is to see the dreaded "There are no updates available" screen...

Maybe just one more check before heading out...

What are your favourite apps?
